It's JUST Climate change

1 - Empowering Communities, Restoring Ecosystems, and Combating Climate Change

Green Action International is CIC based in the UK. It was set up to help communities impacted by climate change in East Africa find a sustainable way to earn income while helping the environment.

Our mission is to plant 1,000,000 trees on a massive scale in East Africa to combat climate change and create green, sustainable jobs for local communities. We work with local communities to plant trees in areas that are vulnerable to climate change and provide them with the skills and training they need to continue planting trees on a long-term basis.

We also work with local communities to build their capacity so that they can provide for themselves and their families through sustainable tree planting. We believe that by working in partnership with local communities, we can not only help them alleviate the harsh effects of climate change but also create sustainable green jobs.

2 - Time for Action Is NOW!

Climate change is the defining crisis of our time, and East Africa is on the frontlines. Prolonged droughts are devastating crops and livestock, pushing millions toward starvation. Erratic rainfall triggers flash floods, destroying homes and vital infrastructure. Rising temperatures fuel disease outbreaks while shifting ecosystems threaten biodiversity and livelihoods.

Though least responsible for global emissions, East African communities are among the hardest hit. Yet, humanity’s reliance on fossil fuels and deforestation has pushed our planet to a breaking point.

But hope remains. Through targeted projects, we’re supporting sustainable farming, ecosystem restoration, and climate resilience in East Africa. The solutions exist—what’s missing is the urgency to act.

This is a fight for all our futures. The time to act is now.

3 - Why We Need More Trees

Planting trees is more than cleaning the air—it's a vital strategy against climate change. A typical tree can absorb around 21 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO₂) per year, while forests collectively capture roughly 30% of global CO₂ emissions. This natural process of carbon capture significantly curbs global warming and restores balance to our atmosphere.

Beyond storing carbon, trees cool the Earth by lowering ground temperatures and stabilizing water cycles. Their roots store water, preventing floods and mitigating droughts by replenishing groundwater. This is especially crucial in regions like East Africa, where extreme weather is increasingly common. Trees in these areas help manage scarce water resources and build resilience during prolonged dry spells.

Each tree planted represents cleaner air, cooler climates, and a concrete step toward combating the climate crisis. It’s a powerful act of hope for a sustainable future.

4 - Tackling the Mathenge Tree: Restoring East Africa’s Ecosystems

The Mathenge tree (Prosopis juliflora), introduced to East Africa to combat deforestation, has become a major problem. Its invasive growth depletes water resources, harms livestock, and chokes native vegetation, devastating farmland and ecosystems.

Green Action International is addressing this crisis through projects focused on removing the Mathenge tree and empowering local communities. These initiatives not only restore farmland but also create jobs, providing tools and training for sustainable land management.

The projects go further by replacing Mathenge with climate-friendly trees that support biodiversity, improve soil, and sequester carbon. This approach combats climate change, stabilises ecosystems, and ensures long-term benefits for local communities. Together, we’re turning a harmful legacy into a story of hope and renewal.

5 - Leading to employment of women and young people

The process of removing invasive Mathenge trees opens up new employment opportunities. Women and young people, in particular, can be involved in tree removal projects, land restoration efforts, and subsequent agricultural activities.
This not only provides them with a source of income but also empowers them through meaningful work that contributes to environmental conservation and community development.
It's a cycle of positive change—healthier ecosystems, empowered communities, and a more sustainable future Introducing biochar technology can spur economic growth, particularly for women and young people in communities. Here’s how:
  1. Training and Education: Programs to teach biochar production and use can empower women and youth with new skills.
  2. Entrepreneurship Opportunities: Selling biochar or biochar stoves can become a source of income, fostering local businesses.
  3. Agricultural Productivity: Improved soil health from biochar use boosts crop yields, which can lead to more job opportunities in farming and related industries.
  4. Community Projects: Organised biochar production projects can provide stable employment and promote community cohesion.

Green Action biochar carbon credits aren’t just a tool for environmental sustainability. They're also a catalyst for social and economic development.
