Malisho Upya

– Our Partners and Collaborative Efforts

At Green Actions International, we believe in the power of collaboration to drive meaningful change.

To ensure the production system is fair and communities benefit at all stages Green Actions provides opportunities for families, farmers and charcoal producers.

Our Malisho Upya program is supported by esteemed partners such as GIRD and Candlelight, both of whom have impressive delivery records. Their involvement ensures the quality of community engagement and the overall impact of our projects.
The C-Sink Farmer is an Artisan Biochar Producer who produces up to 100 m3 of biochar per year from her/his farm and applies this biochar back to his/her soil. C-Sink Farmers are grouped in Artisan Networks with a maximum of 1000 participating farmers managed by our delivery partners acting as Artisan C-Sink Managers. Our delivery partners working with the farmers use the digital Measurement, Reporting and Verification tool to report their biochar production after which certificates issued ,with proceeds distributed on a pro rata basis.

The C-Sink Cook is usually a family or household that uses one or several pyrolysis stoves for cooking, producing an average 30 kg (DW) of biochar per month. The biochar is usually delivered to a central processing location where it is mixed with a C-sink matrix and transformed into biochar-based fertiliser or other biochar-based materials. This is supported by our delivery partners and payments are paid directly to the households on a cash per weight basis.

An Artisan Pro is a registered company or part of a registered company. An Artisan Pro may have several production units and artisans that run these. Artisan Pro biochar is professionally produced by a company, an association, or an individual using all sorts of eligible biomass found within a radius of 10 km from the production site. Artisan Pro biochar is not necessarily applied back to the fields where the biomass was grown but is mostly traded to other farms and industries. The maximum annual biochar production still considered artisanal is 1500 m3 per year. These relationships are managed locally by Artisan C-Sink Managers with regular monitoring by Green Action in its role of Global Artisan C-Sink Manager

Green Action can already sell uncertificated carbon credits for biochar produced by our partners in Nort East Kenya. These early-stage certificates enable businesses to contribute to the development and test of our digital Measurement, Reporting and Verification tool (dMRV). Accreditation by Carbon Standards International in early next year will see Green Action accredited to manage the tradeable issuance of new and retrospective Green Action Biochar Carbon credits.
